"Be a Drummer Without Being a Drummer"
WE LOVE watching people relax into the experience of mindful drumming. As the mind quiets and attention moves into the present moment, rhythm becomes a natural pathway to flow, connection, and self-expression.
We're currently midway through our three-part Self-Care, Sound & Rhythm Series at Drishti Center (San Antonio Tlayacapan, Mx), and it has been wonderful to see participants discovering new ways to connect with themselves and others through rhythm.
In our first workshop, Mindful Rhythm, Play & Presence, we explored creative drumming, playful improvisation, and the joy of making music together in a welcoming, non-judgmental space. Our second workshop, Rhythm, Relaxation & Renewal, took a slower and more restorative approach, using heart-centred drumming, conscious listening, and guided rhythmic journeys to cultivate calm, balance, and presence.
After attending his second workshop in the series, Jason shared this reflection:
"Today was my second workshop with MJ. You don't have to have any drumming lessons or anything; you just pick up whatever drum you feel at the moment. It's very cool to just get into the presence, and MJ teaches you how to sort of let it go and go with the flow and just kind of be a drummer without being a drummer. I think that is what the classes are about, and I really enjoyed them."
We were touched by his words because they beautifully express that our workshops aren't about becoming a better drummer; they're about creating space to be present, listen deeply, express yourself freely, and discover what rhythm can offer when there's no pressure to perform.
We're grateful to everyone who has joined us so far and look forward to sharing the final workshop in the series together.
